Boutique Vineyard and Winery Potential
In 2006, Dr. Greg Jones, research climatologist and Professor at Southern Oregon University, studied the impact of climate on the suitability of wine grape regions worldwide. Dr. Jones performed a 9-month long study of the North Olympic Peninsula. Jones concluded that the North Olympic Peninsula provides sound potential for cool climate viticulture and The Meadows Inn is positioned perfectly according to Dr. Jones' research maps. The entire report can be found at the North Olympic Peninsula Study.
“A combination of all of the region’s viticultural suitability factors identified nearly 2,000 acres of agriculturally zoned land with topographic, soil and climate characteristics suitable for growing cool-weather grape varieties,” says Jones, “most of which are yet unfamiliar to this part of the world... The North Olympic Peninsula’s suitability for growing multiple varieties of cool weather grapes presents an interesting development for the wine industry in Washington and beyond,” says Jones. “People with vision will take advantage of the region’s proximity to a large market and the opportunity to introduce consumers to interesting new varietal wines.”
First Step
As a result of the Jones study, we assisted a local vineyard and fellow wine enthusiast plant their first of 800 pinot noir and pinot menuier vines and in 2008, another 1,700 vines. In 2008, we planted 140 test vines on the grounds of The Meadows Inn. The vines, Pinot Noir clone 667 ENTAV and INRA, grafted on 101-14 root stock. ENTAV and INRA are the two establishments certified in France for presenting and receiving certification for selected French clones. The ENTRA and INTRA TRADEMARK guarantees the origin, authenticity, sanitary quality, and the agronomic and genetic value of the clones. The vines were purchased from Sunridge Nurseries, Bakersfield, CA. The nursery has been in business for thirty years and provides high quality, phylloxera-resistant rootstocks. Sunridge has continued to supply only the highest quality of rootstocks to grape growers through several expansions and additions to their modern, state-of-the-art facilities.
